ISSSTE incorporates 2 robots for psychological support to patients COVID-19

The ‘Robotina Covidia’ and ‘Davinchito Robotinio’ machines are an alternative to reduce infection with respect to medical personnel. The Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) operates two minirobots, “Robotina Covidia” and “Davinchito Robotinio”, as part of the Institutional Program COVID-19 for Psychological Support to patients. “Robotina Covidia” and “Davinchito Robotiniocomo “, which have become an alternative for the lower risk of contagion of medical personnel, provide warm and playful care to the beneficiaries.

The machines are used by specialists from the National Medical Center (CMN)” November 20, “reported the coordinator of this protocol, Lucía Ledesma Torres, who explained that it is an “innovative pilot program, first of a robotic type applied in mental health care in Latin America.” He indicated that this project is part of a set of strategies proposed by the ISSSTE specialists, to meet the mental health challenges derived from the pandemic. The neuropsychology specialist said that “Ro Botina Covidia ”and“ Davinchito Robotinio ”,“ have the objective of approaching the patient considering that they are facing tremendous physical, psychological stress, isolated from the family and partially from the medical team, because we are all there with our protective equipment that they look like astronaut suits and in many cases the patient cannot even see our faces, he does not know exactly who we are ”.

He explained that through these robotic characters, specialists can evaluate the psychological and neuropsychological variables of the patient and make recommendations. “They allow us to have simultaneous interactive communication between the health professional, the patient and even their family members, which contributes to reducing the psychological affective impact of confinement within the hospital,” said the expert.

“The patient listens to us through robots and we see and hear him, those who have COVID-19 and cannot speak, we provide them with a pincer to write their responses, the image of which is transmitted to us by the robot,” he said. The doctor noted that, among their multiple benefits, these devices reduce the exposure of staff to contagion and facilitate the visit pass safely. With the Davinchito robot, which can be moved, “we can have contact and exchange with the patient without the medical staff having to change with the protective equipment for several hours in the unit.”
